Both Bayonetta and Loki lose against their respective opponents. In her dying breaths, Rosa pleaded with Balder to watch over their child and keep her safe from harm. Upon doing so, however, the pair of them play right into Loptr's hands and Balder loses the Right Eye to him.
Loki profits of the distraction to use his card and open the "Gates of Hell" which sucks the Masked Lumen, Loki and Bayonetta in, Loptr is forced to back off.
While Balder is an antagonist in the first game, he becomes a playable character in the Balder was born on October 25, 1379 in the Lumen Sage clan, as a child Balder displayed the abilities necessary to become a Lumen Sage. Balder fades away in golden light and finally perishes, seemingly taking Loptr with him into the afterlife.
The two duel once more and begin to destabilize the insides of the demon as they fight, eventually ending their conflict in a stalemate after summoning both Sapientia and Hydra respectively.
Though they're easily dodged with his abilities, Bayonetta mistakes the Sage for one of Loki's 'assistants' to which the boy replies he has never seen his assailant before. The vision also tells her that the Masked Lumen is really Balder and that he was not actually responsible for the Witch Hunts. As he throws Bayonetta away, she realizes to her shock that he is a Lumen Sage.
As she died, Balder cried out for her as he was suddenly snatched away by a mysterious power. Insidious then explodes and separates the three of them.
In his youth, Balder was one of the most important member of the Lumen Sages, being the bearer of the "Right Eye of Light", one of the Eyes of the World.
Balder crash on Earth with the head of the ruler of Paradiso. Before he is able to escape, Balder moves in his way and traps Loptr within himself in order to prevent his eventual rebirth.
In Inferno, after once again being prevented from killing Loki, Balder destroys his mask and reveals his true identity. Bayonetta tries to intervene, but is stopped by Loptr, who insists that she fight him instead. When Loki claims he doesn't know what he means, the Sage quickly resorts to violence. The Masked Lumen finds Loki alone in Inferno and engages in a fourth fight with Loki while Once in the past, Balder witnessed Rosa's murder for the second time but this time Bayonetta makes him notice that the kid bears the Loptr mark and not the Loki one, Balder is asked to watch over Cereza as she will become the next bearer of the "Left Eye of Darkness" by his dying wife.
Balder and Bayonetta decide to go back to the present to definitely stop Loptr. However, after Bayonetta is struck down by pain after returning Cereza to her own time, it is revealed that Balder survived the shot. The Masked Lumen reveal his face to Loki who asked him what he has done to provoke his wrath but Loki cannot remember since he isn't the one who met Balder 500 years ago, the Lumen puts back on his mask and gets ready to get back to fighting. He addresses Bayonetta as 'Cereza', revealing that he knew who she was since they met. Balder appears as a Primary Shield type Spirit. Donning a mask, Balder became the Masked Lumen and clashed with Bayonetta multiple times in his attempts to kill Loki.
He is the father of Bayonetta and the husband of Rosa.
