Typically, zombies are either slow, dodging you by stumbling around (like in An issue that enhances that frustration is that the reticle for aiming your weapon doesn't adapt when the Freaker is right in front of your face. And this is more than a fitting summary for Days Gone – a zombie game in 2019 featuring open-world mechanics we’ve all seen before – but like Deadon, the team at Bend Studio have got an enormous hearts, and, just like with Deacon, that makes all the difference. Like Deacon with Sarah, I kept going because I hoped to find something, to follow a thread to a possibly fascinating or satisfying or impactful conclusion.

Days Gone insists on tedious, barely interactive flashbacks of Deacon and his wife Sarah which play out like bad high school drama - her demand that he “promise to ride me as much as you ride your bike” at their wedding is a line that sticks in the mind - and repeating missions which begin and end with a stationary Deacon spouting overly-long monologues about their love. Days Gone does not doing anything we haven't seen before, but it does have its own unique style. Days Gone features a huge and beautifully looking open world that's great to explore. Not quite.

If you liked games like Mad Max or you're in absolute love with the zombie survival games, try not to miss this one. Days Gone offers fun open-world exploration and survival-horror gameplay elevated by a compelling post apocalypse narrative and top-notch presentation. Days Gone is a grim, beautiful B-movie; its action and writing are full of pulpy thrills, and by the end of it, I found myself liking a character called Deacon St. John – an achievement in itself.

I was ready to love Days Gone, and in some ways, I still do.

Days Gone checks all the boxes of a proverbial PlayStation exclusive, but never feels like it’s stepping on anyone else’s toes. But the result is one of the best examples of why that can’t work, and of the damage such an effort can have on otherwise solid foundations. I hopped off and the first Ripper that came at me I stabbed multiple times in the stomach (the animation was surprisingly brutal).

But at the end of it all, I'd only gotten scraps. There are highlights and fun tools available within, but the game doesn't push those forward initially, leaving the players to deal with some tedium first. Not something I'd urge you to go pick up on day one, but a pretty good time-suck regardless.

Days Gone is an above average open-world game that is brought down by a weak first act, poor shooting, and a lot of technical issues.

But it also has many technical flaws, its writting is muddled at best and has no subtlety.

But its familiar tale of mankind struggling to re-create society after the end of the world and its romantic through-line are haphazardly structured and under-written, and the characters are too busy calling each other sons of bitches and assholes to say or do anything moving, original or profound. Deacon seethes to himself in near every mission and shows a person angry at near everything. You will receive a verification email shortly.There was a problem.

The hordes improve the game drastically, it's just a shame that a lot of the game suffers in other avenues.
